Bernhardt H. Treybig Jr.
December 26, 1911-July 25, 1999

Services for Bernhardt H. "Benny" Treybig Jr., 87, will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church with the Rev. Albert Boumans officiating.

Visitation will be from 4:30-9 p.m. Friday with a 7 p.m. rosary at David Funeral Home, which will reopen Saturday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.

A native of Yoakum, Texas, and a resident of New Iberia for the past 50 years, Mr. Treybig peacefully departed this life on Sunday afternoon, July 25, 1999, at Ochsner's Foundation Hospital following a sudden stroke. His wife of 64 years, Genevieve, his children and his grandchildren were at his side in his final days and hours.

Mr. Treybig attended Rice University when he and Rice were young. He was a pioneer in seismic oil exploration and served in various supervisory capacities for the Texas Co. from 1932 to 1951. He was instrumental in most of the major Texaco discoveries across south Louisiana in the 1930s and 1940s. He worked for some time in Venezuela and Canada. In 1951 he founded Louisiana Oil Exploration Co., later named LOXCO Inc., and served as its president until his retirement in 1983, following the sale of the company and a period of consultancy. Mr. Treybig's life and character were marked by a kind of noble simplicity. He rose early and worked long hours all of his life. He was thoughtful and generous and responded to even the smallest acts of kindness. He found joy in simple things: faith, family, good food, any sort of useful work, the impulse to share and give, and the smiles of small children. He was a man of endearing modesty and few words. His eloquence was in his deeds and in the shy and gentle smile that spoke what lay in his heart. It shone like a light on the lives of his loved ones and those who truly knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Bonin Treybig of New Iberia; two sons, David L. and Ben H. Treybig III, both of New Iberia; one daughter, Gloria Ann (Boo) Kanwit of Metairie; two sisters, Daisy T. Brandl of Yoakum, Texas, and Lucille T. Langford of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Dr. Bruce L. Treybig of College Station, Texas; and three grandchildren, Steven Treybig of New Iberia, and Catherine Leigh and Matthew Kanwit, both of Metairie.

Mr. Treybig was preceded in death by his parents, Bernhardt H. Treybig Sr. and Althea Rogers Treybig; and one brother, James A. Treybig.

Pallbearers will be S.J. "Bute" Granger Jr., Francis Meaux, Charles Menard, Steven Treybig, Dennis Brandl Jr. and Alan Langford.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of one's choice.

David Funeral Home of New Iberia is in charge of arrangements.
